MLP RPG (Fighting the Unknown) Update

So the MLP RPG has been updated, you know, the one with the ponies. There's apparently lots of new stuff in it, but since I haven't been able to find a detailed changelog I have no idea as to what Harvard Han added this time. I probably won't be able to review it anyways until it leaves the beta stage either, so in the meantime you might as well give it a shot.

...Enjoy, I guess?

War of Harmony Platformer Beta

A mechanics experiment by the creator of the War of Harmony series, this game has no plot and is still a bit rough around the edges, but it's worth check out if only to give the creator some feedback. That being said, the creator is currently on hiatus. Either way, nothing to put after the break. Download's up above, creator's tumblr is here.

Also hey look I'm still alive. Hi everyone.

Rainbow Dash Brawl Mod Trailer & Beta

So, I know you guys like Super Smash Bros. Brawl built around ponies - how about ponies inserted into Brawl? Spearheaded by turbobear, this project currently includes several skins for Rainbow Dash (including Scootaloo and WonderBolt) and a variety of moves. While it's far from finished, you can download the current build here.

The project is currently in growth mode: the team is looking for an animator, a modeler, and an additional code monkey to finish up Dash and begin work on the rest of the Mane 6. If you're interested, or just want to follow the project, the official thread can be found here. Have fun!

Review: War of Harmony IV

War of Harmony IV title screen.
(Download)
The game does contain some grimdark content, in case that bothers you.
On May 12th a demo for some RPG Maker game named War of Harmony IV was released, oddly enough without other WoH games I to III. Perhaps Marshall Ruffy thought the roman numeral 4 looked neat, and decided to quietly include it with the game in the hopes that nobody would ask about the missing first three instalments in the "series", or he could be planning on releasing the other entries later on and out of order (the latter of which seems the most likely, given some of his recent tweets). Either way, it's still kind of a weird decision in naming, one that the game itself will hopefully make up for.

As usual, you can find the rest of the review after the break.

Unlike a good portion of fangames (the vast majority of which are relatively simple Flash games), War of Harmony IV actually has somewhat of a plot, albeit one that vaguely resembles a somewhat generic piece of "epic" fanfiction. It starts off with Rarity and Pinkie Pie venturing into the Everfree Forest to find their missing friends and shortly thereafter throws them into a "Lunar Republic vs Solar Empire" conflict, with Sethisto's non-dragon waifu being involved somehow and using her "regretful victimized woobie" persona. More can be discovered about the plot by following the various alignment paths, if the player decides the game warrants another playthrough.

Thing is, completing one playthrough takes much longer than one might expect, thanks to some rather annoying bugs that can obscure the screen with gothic script upon entering a room or even give the player an entirely unusable save file after using a certain save prompt that appears shortly after beating a boss. Using multiple save files per game and saving every couple minutes is a pretty good idea unless you're some kind of especially determined sadomasochist. As of now, I've already had to restart the game several times and spent much time replaying large sections that could have been spent advancing the plot if things worked properly.

Rarity about to do something very stupid.
Touching a statue with glowing eyes probably isn't the brightest of ideas, but Rarity doesn't have much of a choice here.

Regardless of its issues, WoH IV can be fairly enjoyable on those occasions when it is working properly. It places far more of an emphasis on dialogue and exploration than grinding, which is quite a relief because the combat tends to be somewhat unsatisfying. Bosses tend go down far too quickly, and when combined with the overabundance of health and mana restoration areas the player is rarely in any real danger, which is quite disappointing even for a RPG not focused on combat. I kind of got the impression after playing for a while that Marshall's intention is more to tell an interactive story than anything else, which is fine with me because War of Harmony IV manages to accomplishe that goal for the most part (notwithstanding a few grammatical errors).

As with the majority of RPG Maker projects I've seen, this one makes fairly extensive use of the default tilesets and music, but stands out by using them in a tasteful manner and not taking advantage of the default enemies (which get really old after you see them in a half-dozen games). Mixed in with the soundtrack are several original pieces by Som3thingUX, which are pretty good but don't stand out as being particularly memorable. There's also some minor visual effects, such as drifting fog and blood rain, that aren't really impressive from a technical perspective but are fairly nice touches, even if the blood felt a bit out-of-place in this type of game.

To put it bluntly, I have rather mixed feelings about War of Harmony IV. It's not bad or anything like that, but some stability issues prevented me from getting far enough into the project to decide whether I liked it or not. Until a bugfix release comes out, I'll just slap a temporary 5/10 on the project and re-review it once Marshall is able to fix it up a tad.

5/10 Bloomberg Grade

Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that the issues I encountered may have been related to my running the game in Wine, although since Windows 8.1 broke my dual-boot setup I'm unable to confirm or deny this. If it's true, however, I might have to re-review things sooner than I thought...

Nightfall Beta v3.89

A typical daytime gameplay screenshot of Nightfall.
(Download)
It seems that Night Breeze of Silly Mares Games will be especially busy this November due to college, and since the real fourth beta for Nightfall isn't ready yet he's decided to make a relatively minor release in the meantime to pacify the masses. Enjoy, fellow pony fans, as I look into the possibility of eventually switching over to the Ghost blogging platform while listening to sludge metal and wondering why the fridge's water dispenser pours warm water instead of cold (which doesn't make any sense to me).

Release notes have been copypasted below the break.

  • Collecting structures now restores half of its energy cost.
  • Added air dash.
  • Enemies' AI improved.
  • Shadowbolts and some bosses can now stun the player/mercenaries.
  • Items and structures can now be sold.
  • 'Force night' option now gives some extra money in Normal mode.
  • Creative mode now features double money gain.
  • Light Torches now show their area of effect before being built as well.
  • Shorter position cooldown for building.
  • You don't lose lives anymore by falling off the map.
  • Lower drop rate for power-ups.
  • Added 'Game speed' option (F5).
  • Game is now slightly faster by default.
  • Changed 'show/hide coordinates' key to F7.
  • Other minor changes and bug fixes.

Nightfall Beta 3

Nightfall gameplay screenshot
Yep, Silly Mare Games has released yet another beta for their upcoming Nightfall project, and it comes with plenty of improvements such as an inventory system, along with a compass to prevent the player from getting lost while exploring the world. Of course, there are also a decent amount of balance upgrades to further polish the experience before release, along with some new night stages and whatnot for those who breezed through the original beta.

I would write more, but I'm rather tired so I'll just copy & paste the changelog below the break. Goodnight, and enjoy the game!

  • Added Inventory and Items system/menu (including Frost and Flame Towers). This is huge. Items are not dropped very much, but you can search for 'Mystery Bags' around the world as well, and I'll be probably adding more and more items in later versions.
  • Added Spirit system. Pretty much like MP in RPGs.
  • Added Compass system. The game really needed this. Now you can wander around without worrying of losing your way back to your base.
  • Added 10 more nights (new enemies, bosses, etc.): up to night 30. Still no story though, just plain old sandbox-building-and-killing-and-upgrading-and-total-chaos nights like it's always been.
  • Unknown structures cannot be collected anymore. You better search for a nice spot amongst some pre-placed trees, because a strategic location is a must now. You won't be able to collect those structures you haven't unlocked yet.
  • Structures can now be healed using spirit. Thanks to EggheadDash for this idea!
  • Longer starting attack range. Because I don't know what I was thinking. The range was ridiculously short.
  • Dirt Blocks no longer cost energy. Again, thanks to EggheadDash for the idea!
  • All characters constantly regenerate energy now (slower than Applejack, though). It's small, but it's there, and makes a huge difference.
  • Rainbow Dash now pierces through enemies while flying.
  • Pinkamena mode now doubles up defense as well.
  • Wider range for Light Torches' effect.
  • Turret Towers have slightly better aim.
  • Lower price for some structures.
  • Shorter days and nights. 200 seconds each, instead of 250.
  • Enemy spawn is now limited to a maximum number of simultaneous enemies.
  • Enemies rebalanced. A lot.
  • Added 'Dirt Block' hotkey (ctrl). And again, thanks to EggheadDash for this idea as well!
  • Added 'order mercenary go to point' key (F). Silly Flitter kept blocking the entrances.
  • Several key changes: 'Mercenaries menu' to G, 'force night' to Backspace, 'Achievements menu' to T, and 'show/hide coordinates' to F5.
  • Game window is now resizable.
  • Other minor changes and bug fixes. A LOT, actually.

MLP:FiM - Pony Creator Finished

MLP: FiM - Pony Creator is an advanced Pony creator programed in flash by generalzoi.

This game has no goal, allowing you to fully customize a pony of your own. Unlike other Pony creators, this one is extremely extensive! You can choose from a wide scale of different sizes and shapes for your pony, randing from filly to Slenderpony height. The colors for your pony's mane, coat, and tail are all full color scale. There are a bunch of different head shapes as well, allowing you to create either a male or a female pony. A full selection of Eyes, Expressions, mouthes, manes and tales, a cutie mark creator, custom poses, and accessories really makes this game stand out.

When playing this, I experienced very few problems, the only one worth mentioning was dealing with the eye location. When the eye is really small, it gets 'stuck' on the edge where it can't go any further. This isn't a major problem, because you're still able to move it with your mouse, it just doesn't go as far as some might hope.

Too lazy to color correctly. Or find the right mane/tail.

The game really does come with a lot of customization, and after it's 'completion', it comes fully loaded with a pose function, where you can either choose from a list of preset poses, or pose each limb on it's own. You're also able to export the pony in png image format with a transparent background. You can also save it as a high quality image, though due to some strange coding bugs, both export buttons may not work at times, he is currently looking for a solution to this minor problem (I only had problems with the high res so far).

The game also includes a number/letter import/export function, so you can share your pony design, or save your pony design for later editing! Though please don't spam the comments with your pony designs. That's what DeviantArt is for.

This game was made very well, and even though it might seem a little complex at first, the tutorial and guide definitely helped, and was jam-packed with different customization features. This game runs very smooth, but being the game it is, I cannot  put a rating on it. So have Insane Pinkie and Flootershoi instead.

Updates: Ponyplace/Nightfall Beta 2

http://www.deviantart.com/art/Scootaloo-the-Courier-278650955

Scootaloo's bringing the news! That, or I needed an excuse to use this vector.

Important updates from the Ponyplace and Nightfall projects after the break!

After a long hiatus, Ponyplace is back! The layout of rooms and character selection is much the same, but accounts are now handled through your gmail via Mozilla Persona.

When I logged on, the site seemed much better regulated than its former incarnation, with several mods patrolling the chat rooms. Whether you'd care to try out the new classroom minigame or just shoot the breeze, it's worth a look!

Hot on the heels of the original, Nightfall's second beta release is here! It's always nice to see frequent updates of a game incorporating gamer feedback, and bodes well for the project's success in the future. Notable upgrades include ten more nights, doubling the original number, and a new mercenary system. Also added are some new keyboard controls and several balancing measures.

For more screenshots and a full list of new stuff, check out the release post and give the game a whirl!

Beta: My Little Miner: Disturbance is Magic

My Little Miner: Disturbance is Magic (Beta)

Recently we posted about a fangame with the title My Little Miner: Disturbance is Magic that seemed to be centered around digging around for gems in a volcano. The creator said that he was releasing a beta soon, and it turns out that by "soon" he meant 4 four days later. So if you're interested in trying out this Flash/HTML5 fangame then head on over to http://mlm.blitzspace.com/ and give it a play. He also wants feedback on his game's beta so if you have any then send him an email over at BlitzProg@BlitzSpace.com.

Have fun!

Pinkie Pie Platformer Beta

Pinkie Pie Platformer

My disdain for generic Pinkie Pie platformers is quite infamous. In my opinion there are simply too many of them around, and it's almost grown to be somewhat of a cliche. Yes, Pinkie Pie may be a natural choice for platformers given her fondness of bouncing, but it would be really nice to have a Fluttershy platformer every once in a while. However just because Pinkie Pie platformers in general are rather lousy doesn't mean they all have to be, and the brilliantly titled Pinkie Pie Platformer promises to be the best of the bunch. It has it all: fun gameplay, great graphics (parallax scrolling!), and music that won't make your ears bleed unless Ghostbusters somehow scarred you as a child. The game is about halfway done at the moment and features a playable beta version for you to enjoy until the final version comes out (which the creator estimates will be in about 4-5 days). Enjoy!

Also is it just me or are playable betas for My Little Pony fangames starting to become somewhat of a trend? It would be great if it is, as I like being able to play a game before the final release and helping report bugs. Do you folks like having playable beta versions?

Getting to Cloudopolis
In order to get to Cloudopolis, you must travel via the airship in Cantermore!

If you're in Cantermore, travel up the cliff to the airship port and board your way onto the airship.

If you're starting in Ponydale, you must first go to the train station and travel to Cantermore, and then go to the airship port.

Getting to Cantermore
In order to get to Cantermore, you must travel via train from Ponydale or via airship from Cloudopolis!

If you're in Ponydale, you must travel via train. The train station is just past Sugarcane Corner.

If you're in Cloudopolis, go to the airport located high up and to the right of the main cloud.

Getting to Ponydale
If you'd like to visit the quaint little town of Ponydale, you must go by train from Cantermore.

If you're in Cloudopolis, go to the airport and get to Cantermore.

Once you're in Cantermore, simply go to the train station by by Astral Charm.

Questing
Plenty of NPCs (Non-Player Characters) need help with their tasks! Some give out special prizes if you lend them a helping hoof!

Go up to any NPC, right click, and select "Talk." NPCs have a "..." over their name.

Listen to what they have to say, and be sure to follow their instructions in order to move on in the quest.

At the end, you might get a reward for your kindness!

Battling
Watch out when going to the Evershade Forest! It's home to some scary monsters!

In order to defend yourself against the creatures you'll encounter, try using your special combat abilities!

Earth Ponies have Seismic Buck and Rough Terrain, Unicorns have Rainbow Fields and Magical Arrow, and Pegasi have Dual Cyclone and Gale! All three races have Ground Pound.

When ready, select a creature, a target reticule should appear. Attack the mob by getting in their range and selecting your skill.

When the enemy's health gets to zero, they'll faint! Don't worry though, I'm sure they can just walk it off.

Parties
If you want to form a party with other players, you can right-click them and add them to your party!

Parties are useful for going out and exploring. You never know when you might run into monsters, and there is always safety in numbers!

Trading
Do you have an interesting item that you'd like to give to a friend? Well, you can trade them!

Simply right click on your friend and hit "Trade." The other pony needs to accept your trade for it to continue.

Once accepted, you'll see a screen. Left click and add the item to the trading menu.

When both players are satisfied with the trade, they both must hit "Ready." When both players hit "Ready," a "Done" button will appear. Once both players hit the "Done" button, the trade will be completed.

Stuck Somewhere?
Have no fear! No need to call the moderators! Simply type /stuck or unstuck me and you will be moved to the starting point of the map. (This will not work if you are in combat.)
I may or may not be around the servers during the weekend. If I am, I'll be romping around as Jalapeño Billy if anyone's interested in stalking me or goofing off. See you guys there, maybe!

Megapony Beta

Megapony title screen

I've always wanted ponified remakes of classic videogames, and we don't get them very often (and no, Pony Fantasy 6 doesn't exactly count as it is a mod, not a complete remake). A couple months back a rather interesting game called Megapony was announced that promised to be a MLP Megaman game, and despite my personal opinion that it would never come to fruition a playable beta version has been released. Now I won't lie to you: I am terrible at Megapony but it is great fun and I look forward to the eventual release of the full game so I can review it, and trust me when I say that this game will be getting a very high score from me as it is already one of the best playable fangames out there right now (and way better then PurpleTinker's Quack Quest, which was apparently intended as a trollgame).

Interested in playing Megapony? You can download it over at http://www.mediafire.com/?99hvd3x7sibkv8g. Hope you like it!

PonyRL

A screenshot of PonyRL
PonyRL

One thing we don't have nearly enough of these days is roguelikes, and not just in the Brony fandom either. Then again, it's probably because everybody has been too busy playing NetHack (which, in all seriousness, can take years to beat) and The Binding of Isaac to make their own contributions to the genre, but some Russian guy has decided to finally give the pony fandom what it deserves: a My Little Pony roguelike. Don't be fooled by the ASCII graphics; PonyRL is very easy to pick up and play, especially since it can be played in the browser instead of the traditional Unix terminal.

Mind you, the game is still in beta and incomplete, so the creator would really like some feedback (preferably on the PonyRL My Little Game Dev thread). He also doesn't speak English natively, so the game may contain its fair share of typos.

Nightfall Beta

Nightfall

Over the past few months we've been posting videos of Nightfall, a sidescrolling platformer/tower defense/whatever game by Silly Mare Games. Development went along smoothly, and now they've already released a beta build of their game (which was quickly followed by another with various balance improvements). The demo even features several bosses: a rarity for a pony fangame, which almost guarantees an appearance by our favorite swiss cheese-legged queen. Still, I am curious to see what other bosses they have in store...

Given that the game is a beta and still in active development it's unfortunately more than a bit too early for us to review it, but you folks can still play it and perhaps give Silly Mare Games some feedback.

MLP:Online Episode 1 Beta

MLP: Online Episode 1: First Contact

At BroNYCon last Saturday they promised to release a beta of the single player MLP:Online Episode 1 on Monday. If we really want to be technical they did fulfil their promise by releasing just before midnight, although for the most of us that meant that we couldn't play until today. Is there a problem with that? Not really, and this way we should end up with a slightly less buggy beta, although from what I've heard you should prepare for your fair share of bizarre glitches. Remember to report any bugs to the team on the help and support forums, and that if a bug is humorous enough (or just really darn weird) then you should take a screenshot or record a video so that future generations can enjoy them too.

Right now the beta only supports Windows and lacks much of the content from the final game, such as the boss. I haven't tested the game in Wine yet but I think it should run decently enough. And as for the download, well you can find it at http://mlponline.net/download.php. Happy testing!

Play Legends of Equestria in August

Since I'm guessing that most of you people have already participated in one of Legends of Equestria's many open server weekends and pretty much know what to expect, there's not much for me to say aside from that it'll begin at 12:01 AM EST on August 8th and end at 11:59 PM on the 10th, and that you will need an account on their forums in order to participate in the usual mixture of general chat, roleplay, and enterprising young chaps finding increasingly convoluted ways to leave the confines of the map. Not the sort of thing that I usually enjoy, but it's not like I really have much for friends to play LoE with, so I usually just run around as a lowly mudpony and quit shortly after reaching that one really high spot just outside the lawyer-friendly city of Cantermore.

In case you wish to read the original announcement for whatever reason, you may do so at http://forum.legendsofequestria.com/index.php?topic=11989.0

Waiting is Magic iOS Beta

Most of you probably remember Waiting is Magic quite well, and those of you with iPhones will be pleased to know that the game (no, not that game) is coming to the iOS platform. That's right: you'll be able to play WiM on the go! According to Penta Studios the port is almost complete, but before submitting it to the App Store they want some beta testers to make sure that there aren't any major bugs in the final version.

Interested in playing Waiting is Magic on your iPhone before everypony else? Then visit their post at http://pentastudios.net/index.php?page=news&id=52 and leave a comment with your UDID. Happy testing!

Nightfall Beta Five

Nightfall's title screen.

Today marks the release of Nightfall's fifth beta, along with all the new features and balance adjustments that such an update usually entails. So if you've already finished My Little Investigations (or haven't gotten around to playing it, like yours truly) and have some spare time, you might as well give this a spin and see if the changes are for the better or not, since apparently the game is getting fairly close to leaving beta and will be considered stable once it does so.

Changelog below the break.

  • Added Ghost Structures system. This little feature may change the whole way the game is played! Pressing [Shift]+[S] over a structure turns it into a 'Ghost Structure', which allows you to shoot through them. In return, they receive 25% more damage from enemies.
  • Added Trance system. You now have a little 'Trance' bar, which is filled by killing enemies or getting hit. In short, the more Trance you have, the more damage you make! A full Trance bar means x3 damage!
  • Added autosave and quicksave (F5-F8). The game gets autosaved after each night, which you can load in case you get a Game Over. You can also quicksave (F5) and quickload (F8) your game at any time! (even at the main menu).
  • Added new items and achievements. Trance and Invincibility potions!
  • Improved enemies' behavior.
  • Killing enemies now also restores spirit. You have to kill them yourself, though! Not your towers.
  • Trees now constantly regenerate HP. You couldn't heal 'em, but they can heal themselves now! No more worries.
  • Structures can't get completely destroyed anymore upon falling/dying. Another big change here. Nothing was as frustrating as falling off the map (or getting killed) and walking back to your Base, only to find there was nothing left. This doesn't happen anymore! Structures still get damage upon falling/dying, but they can only be destroyed by enemies.
  • Leveling up mercenaries costs less money. Half the price for all ponies!
  • Mercenaries don't obstruct your building box anymore. Mercenaries were really annoying because of this. Luckily, you can build over them now, so don't worry!
  • Added 5 more nights (new enemies, boss, etc.): up to night 35.
  • Last implemented night now loops (endless runs). You don't get 'enemy-less nights' anymore! Night 35 loops (without the boss) so you can keep playing if you want.
  • 'Destiny Shift' costs much less spirit. NOW it's useful.
  • Invincibility now lasts 10 seconds.
  • Changed 'Game speed' key to F2.
  • Other minor changes and bug fixes. There was this huge bug regarding night 25's boss which would prevent the game from re-generating the world. There are also more changes and bug fixes regarding enemy spawn rate, skills, achievements, mercenaries, store upgrades, graphics, and the like.

Twilight Sparkle Adventures Beta

Download it Here!
Some of you remember the post we made last month about a new pony RPG by the name of Twilight Sparkle Adventures. Well, now the game is out of demo mode and into beta mode. The game is still very similar to its demo, which included most of the content seen here. The beta adds the rest of the story line, as well as adding graphical improvements. For a full review of this game, I'd recommend clicking this link, as this post is just an announcement. If this game gets released fully, it will most likely be re-reviewed. Thanks, and have a good night!

Servant of Discord Beta Demo

Servant of Discord is a pretty little Zelda-esque game set in a forest temple - and that's the extent of the story for now. Although this beta is rough around the edges, with bumpy collision and a little lag in the online version (at least in my case) it shows a lot of promise, with nice sprite work, mechanics, and soundtrack.

Playing as Twilight, slash enemies to bits with a magic sword or fire spells at them from a distance. Locate the keys and blast your way through to the boss. Good luck!
