Story of the Blanks Level Editor

While we wait around for that Story of the Blanks reimagining (which is apparently still under development, if we take their word for it), some anon on /mlp/ suggested that we post about the game's built-in level editor, which has been around since its release during the Creepypasta contest. To access it, the player has to open the game's SFW file, make the browser window much larger vertically than horizontally, click Play and then press Home+End. If you read the guide and figure out the editor, more power to you I guess. Still, it's not like this is really an appropriate tool for creating an entirely new game unless you're really crazy.

Also, the comments for our Creepypasta contest reveal that apparently there were two entries, but Story of the Blanks was the only one that was posted. I wonder what happened to that other one...

So little to post these days...I'm only really putting this article up because there isn't much else, if anything at all. Also, upgrading to Windows 8.1 broke my dual-boot setup, so there's that as well.

Cutie Mark Crusade Demo Release

                                                    Download Here!
Hi everypony!

Development team Manestream Games has unveiled the demo to their new game Cutie Mark Crusade: A Dash of Adventure.  This is a point-and-click game starring-who else-the Cutie Mark Crusaders.  The art style is very detailed and accurate to the show, and the gameplay shows a lot of promise, even at this early stage.  However, this is just a concept demo so it's far from the final product.  If you enjoy it and want to support the team, follow them on Facebook or Twitter.  If you have any critiques, Manestream encourages you to let them know, so post on either of those or send them an email at info@manestreamgames.com.  Check it out now!

Story of the Blanks

A link to the EqG Arcade page.
Story of the Blanks is an 8-bit styled creepy game. This was the winner of the Creepypasta Game Contest, and well known for it's creepy and slightly disturbing storyline. The game itself features music by CRTified TechnicianZero V2, and DarkNES.

The game starts out with you playing as Applebloom, and she's trying to find her Cutie Mark. She ends up following Twilight into the Everfree Forest, and after they get split up strange things start happening.

The game itself is Extremely well made, the graphics keep true to the 8-bit theme, and the controls run very smoothly. While playing, I couldn't find any bugs or problems with collisions, or anything else. The game was designed to feel 8-bit, and it did it's job very well.

Whooooo are you? Who, who? Who, who? (I really wanna know)

The puzzles in the game are relatively challenging, but the game focuses a lot more on the story than extensive gameplay, causing the game to be unfortunately short. The up side to this is a rich storyline, full of creepy surprises while keeping true with the pony's personalities.

While playing the game, I found myself very wrapped up in it all, and I really, REALLY enjoyed playing it. Honestly, I might even say this is the best Pony Game I've played so far, even better than my favorite Luna Game series. The game has become so popular, it already has a lot of fanart.
8/10 (image soon)

Review: The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000

Play it Here!
The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 is a game back from last summer that's somehow never gotten its own review until now. This game, made in the Unity engine by Texel, features art and design by egophiliac and music by Whitetail. It's a fast-paced game, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a play. Note: you'll have to have Unity Web Player installed before it'll work. Read more after the break...

The gist of the game is this - as the Apple family, make as much cider as possible in the time limit to beat the conniving, but ever industrious Flim Flam brothers. To make cider, you must press arrow keys in the correct order as fast as you can. Stringing combos together is the most important thing here - if you avoid making mistakes, you'll be churning out cider barrels like nobody's business.

The game features Easy, Medium, Hard, and Zen modes. From my experience playing, these ratings are pretty accurate - Easy mode is very easy, Medium is a bit of a challenge, but still very manageable, and Hard is really quite difficult. It's easy to get a good combo-rhythm going, but, especially in Hard mode (which is 3 minutes long), your hands get fatigued and you can easily get thrown off. To unlock Hard mode, you have to beat Medium, and there is variance between each difficulty gameplay-wise, so it's worthwhile to play each of them.

I can't believe Spitfire didn't help them out...wait - wrong episode.
For such a simple concept, this game's professionalism is very impressive. All the little design details add up to make a really enjoyable game. From the music detuning whenever you make a mistake, to the arrow combos actually representing the motions involved in each picture, this game is full of intricacy.

The work of egophiliac (the amazing artist behind Moonstuck and Slice of Life), and Whitetail (one of the music composers for Mane6), really make this game shine, in my opinion. Add to that some great gameplay from Texel, and you've got yourself a really fun game, which is why I give it...

(April Fools) Equestria Gaming Requested to Cease and Desist, Goes Underground

Edit: Before I cause any more undue stress, this post is just a joke. Take it with a grain of salt :)
Hello all! Hope you're having a good day so far. Ours hasn't been so peachy.

A few hours ago, we received a Cease and Desist notification from Habsro, Inc concerning our "violation of Habsro Inc.’s common law trademark rights, common law service mark rights, and trade name rights related to their MY LITTLE PONY property."

Needless to say, this is a crushing blow for the website, and at this point it seems very unlikely we'll be able to continue to provide our current services. Head down past the break for more details.

After receiving the notification, we immediately contacted the sender to verify its validity and began to prepare for the worst. After a brief exchange, we've confirmed that there is no legal way to proceed with the site as it currently exists. As of today, Equestria Gaming is ceasing and desisting in its current format.

However, things are not as bad as they seem. We're currently exploring a variety of extralegal operations to keep the spirit of Equestria Gaming alive, including ham radio broadcasting and a subscription service via a series of vespa couriers. We're in the process of cataloguing all of our previous articles as .jpeg files, and are prepared to distribute them via slow-scan television upon request.

Needless to say, this post amounts to a declaration of our intent to turn to piracy. Our temporary headquarters consists of three crates in the back of a cattle van traveling through central Asia, but our final destination must remain a secret. Any mail sent to our old address will not be forwarded.

We implore you, our readers, to remain vigilant in these troubled times. Know only that the Equestria Gaming staff would lay down their lives for the free exchange of pony gaming news if need be. Oh, and have a happy April Fool's Day.

The team over at Equestrian Dreamers has released a rather interesting update on the state of their upcoming indie game, My Little Investigations. The update shows off much of their recent work in the visual aspect of the game, and contains shoutouts to their various dev team members. It's well worth a read, and can be found at http://www.equestriandreamers.com/2012/03/06/mli-a-first-look/.

Cutie Mark Crusade Unofficial Mac Port

A couple days ago I created an unofficial Mac OS X port of the Cutie Mark Crusade Demo, and I decided that I might as well post it up here. For those of you who are tired of running the game through the command line and just want to launch it by clicking on an app, here you go!

Download (For Mac OS X): http://www.mediafire.com/?3zhjg7o8yoo2kub

Please note that this port is somewhat unstable, and I have no idea if it works for ponies other then me. Please leave feedback on stability in the comments.

Review:Cider Attack

The Apple Family's Cider Attack

Link to EqG Arcade page.
Sometimes, one does not create a game with the intention of creating an epic masterpiece. Sometimes, it's nice to just have a small, highly addictive game to kill time, have fun and get a good highscore. Well, that's exactly what Cider Attack is. We've seen a couple games created with that intention in mind, and with varying degrees of success.

How did the cider turn out? Find out after the break!

In Cider Attack the player controls the Mane 6 (along with Big Macintosh and Applebloom) as they try to make as much of their high-quality, trademark cider as they can. The player is assigned points for every barrel they create (although they are only assigned once ten barrels are created), and accidentally making lower-quality cider will decrease your highscore. Additionally, the player must produce the cider within the time limit, or else the game ends.

No Pinkie, Applejack's tail is not scented.
Cider (well, the Apple family's brand) is apparently made in three simple steps, and the gameplay revolves around this. In the first part, you first play as either Applejack or Fluttershy and buck the apples from the tree (shook from the tree if you are playing as Fluttershy), and then you switch to Applebloom/Pinkie Pie and catch them. This is the meat of the gameplay (simple though it may be), and arguably the most crucial step to getting a good highscore. Not to mention that it's the most fun of the three steps, and involves the most skill. However, the apples always seem to fall in the same pattern, which makes this step far too predictable.

Lovely!
The second step gives you control of Rarity (or Granny Smith), and has you select which apples to put into the cider. Just toss in anything that isn't brused! This part is quite easy, although if you are in a rush to beat the clock it could become a living nightmare (and leave you with the worst-tasting cider ever manufactured). For the last step, all you have to do is hold down the "S" key for Rainbow Dash and Big Macintosh to grind the apples into tasty, tasty cider. In my opinion, that part wasn't even necessary, and could've been easily combined with step two, but it does make things more hectic if you're running low on time.

I seem to have noticed a trend going on lately that has people in need of sprites for their pony games using the sprites from the Desktop Ponies project, and even though they are pretty good sprites, I am getting rather sick of them. I mean, can't someone just draw their own sprites for once? Anyways, other then that (and mind you, the sprites aren't BAD, just a little overused) the graphics are decent, considering that it's a quick flash game, but the background is kind of fuzzy, which detracts from the overall look of the game. The music, while not original, is quite fitting, and thankfully does not get annoying after long periods of playing the game, which is particularly useful for this kind of game.

Couldn't you two have just done this during the second step?
The Apple Family's Cider Attack aimed to become a simple, addictive game, and it succeeded in it's goal. It's main objective was fun, and that it is, nothing more, nothing less. It's well worth a couple plays, or maybe more if you wish for a really high score. Even though it's most certainly fun, I cannot give it a very high rating, and thus I give it a 5.

(See what I did there?)
