Super Smash Ponies Update #3

Zilven Sparkle and the team behind Super Smash Ponies have decided to scrap their current work and start from scratch - so that they can make the game bigger and better than ever! Looks like Fighting is Magic may have some competition to look out for. Screenshots of the new look after the break!

The stage pictured is Battlefield from Super Smash Bros. Brawl in all it's ponified glory. More images like this should be popping up on the project's DeviantArt soon.

Early shading tests.

I have to say, the new graphics look pretty impressive. The project's rapid expansion has produced a need for new voice actors - if you can voice Pinkie Pie, Rarity, or Twilight, or want to help out in another way, contact the team via Tumblr, Twitter, DA, or Youtube.

My Little Game Jam has begun!

Why are you reading this? You're already behind! Yes, the first round of My Little Game Jam started four hours ago! You've only got until this weekend ends (midnight Sunday to Monday UTC, or 4:00 PM Pacific Time on the 7th, for all my Seattle bronies) to complete your game. It's certainly not too late to start - but you must have your chaos-themed My Little Pony fangame completed and submitted by the deadline. Here are the rules, shamelessly copied from their front page:
  • All assets and game logic must be created during the weekend of competition.
  • The contest is individuals only. You have to work alone.
  • The game must follow the theme announced at the beginning of the competition (chaos).
  • Code and assets must be open-sourced and added to the submission.
Caught flat-footed? Never fear: you may miss the contest, but any 48 hours is a perfectly good time to make a pony fangame in my book. I'm thoroughly jazzed to see what you guys come up with, and I'm certainly looking forward to raving about the winners come next week!

My Little Game Dev Pony Build-Up Event!

For those of you who would like to improve your skills in the arts of game making, here is a good chance to do so. My Little Game Dev is hosting an event about creating Pony mini-games based on themes. If you want to make a game but lack the motivation or the base to do so, this is a good start. And for those who don't actually want to make games, you will still be able to play the entries, so why not take a look around?

The basic structure of the event is this: Every 4 days, at midnight GMT+8 (Philippines, Manila), the MLGD page will put up the theme for the mini-games, and those who want to take part must make a game that includes that theme. This is very flexible; you can interpret the themes however you want, and if you'd prefer, you can skip a theme and make a game with both that theme and the next one.

The game doesn't have to be complete; incomplete games are accepted too - just be sure to state if it's complete or not. The deadline for each theme is 4 days, so try to submit before the next theme starts.

The first day of the event has already started(and I blame myself for not finding this yesterday), and you can find this round's theme here: Pony Build Up Day 1!

Have fun and happy game making!

MLP:Online Prepares for Pon-E3

MLP: Online

MLP:Online's Announcement

With Pon-E3 coming up within a few short days our friends have been making preparations for their part in the event. However according to this thread it caught the MLP:Online team somewhat off-guard, as they just released the beta version of Episode 1 and didn't have too much for new content to show. In their desperate scramble to find something to do somepony suggested that they have a Q&Neigh session, as well as a discussion about interesting topics somewhat related to the game. This might sound kind of boring, but the thing is that all questions will be from the community and you can submit one yourself! Just go onto Twitter, ask @MLPOnline something and your question could be answered on their Livestream (I dunno where that is yet, they still have yet to announce that bit).

For some copypasta from their original announcement with more detailed information, continue on after the break!

PART 1: Q&NeighWe're gonna be setting up our very own livestream where we answer your questions about anything and everything, be it the game, the way our team works, whether we like cereal at breakfast-time. Go ahead and ask!TwT Get on twitter, write your question down with @MLPOnline somewhere in your tweet, and we'll be able to see everyone's questions. You have all week to come up with some great ones!PART 2: DiscussionWe'd also like to have a nice, in depth discussion for all of you to sink your teeth into. It could be the pros versus the cons of including a combat system in games, Designing games that stick to the show or deter from it in varying degrees, Specific difficulties when it comes to making pony games, whatever you want--make sure it's well thought out, and something you'd like to talk about. Let's hear from you!TwT In the comments below, give us your discussion topics. Are there two different sides to your topic? if so, list some pros and cons. Feel free to address other topics posted, whether or not they seem interesting to you and what you have to say. We want to know what interests you!

As a final note, I of course have to tell you that our livesteam is all in good fun. In the discussion portion especially, anything that is brought up will not necessarily be a part of our game. We just want to spend some time with our fans and share our thoughts. Can't wait to hear from you!

More Details on Mane 6's Pon-E3 Stream

Fighting is Magic

Earlier today Mane 6 gave out some more info on their role in Pon-E3. We already knew what they were doing (hosting a stream of the EVO build at on the 14th at 3:00pm PST), but this time they've stated that to ensure everypony gets the best experience possible the team has switched their channel from being on Livestream to Twitch.tv and can be found at http://www.twitch.tv/manesix#. Be sure to bookmark it, folks!

After a break we have a copypasta mini-FAQ from their announcement.

Mane6 Stream III FAQ

A: Saturday, July 14, 2012. at 3PM (PST)

Q: Where is it happening?
A: At our new Twitch.tv channel, which you can get to by clicking this link

Q: Any cost?, admittance fee?, Tickets for sale?

A: Nope. Everypony and Granny Smith can attend.

Q: Why at that time/day?, Why not at <insert another date/time>?

A: We'll be making a recording for those that can't join us; The Youtube recording should go up a bit after the event is ended :)

Q: Will you be holding any more streams after this one?
A: Probably. We'll post future dates and times for stream sneak peeks as they get scheduled

Q: What characters will be shown at the Stream?.
A: Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rarity and Pinkie pie ONLY. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy won't be shown during this stream.

Q: Will you be answering specific questions?
A: Nope. For the answers to the most commonly asked questions, please read our FAQ (Link is at the top of the page); If yours isn't answered there, you can always ask us on the twitter, and we'll get back to you.

Hope you can accompany us!

And not every game has to be a long term project, either - short term arcade style games can be really fun as well.

Introducing Lyra's List

Do you have an amazing idea for a pony video game, but lack the game developing experience to make it a reality? Are you in the process of developing a pony video game, but need some added help from programmers/artists/musicians/writers/et cetera? Are you a person with game developing skill, but no project to work on? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the Game Design Document List, henceforth known as Lyra's List (cause she likes stuff named after her) may be helpful to you. Learn more after the break...

One of the first steps in the development of many games is to write a Game Design Document (or GDD). A GDD's purpose is to coordinate efforts amongst a development team. It forms a sort of guide to all the team-members, so everyone has a sight of the overall vision.

A GDD simply contains information on aspects of the game, such as story, characters, level design, gameplay, art, music, user interface, and controls. There's no specific formula to create a GDD, it just has whatever information and content the developer chooses to include. For example, some GDDs include portions of script, and others include concept art. Neither of these steps are necessary, but are often used.

The role of Lyra's List is to take submissions in the form of GDDs, and compile them in a list so that people with a vision of a pony game can meet and collaborate with people who have game making experience, to help make truly amazing video games.

To submit to Lyra's List, you must draft a GDD (of any length and format) in Google Docs, and send the link to me at enigma9994@gmail.com, with the word GDD somewhere in the subject line. Be sure to make the document public, and include the email address of yourself and anyone else involved with the project in the document.

Alternatively, if you are someone who's looking for a project, you can write up a quick resume like document (also in Google Docs) detailing skills, experience, preferred genres, etc., so prospective devteams would be able to contact you. This is preferred, but it's also acceptable to link to a site that contains work that you've done (your DeviantArt account, for example).

In the email, include the following information, if you are submitting a GDD: your name (whatever people call you on the ponynet), the working title for your game, the genre (as you would describe it), and whether you think it will be a short term (< 1 week), medium term (1 - 6 weeks), or long term (> 6 weeks) project.

If you're looking for a project to work on, include the following in your email: your name (on the ponynet), and what your primary talent is (programming, background art, spriting, music, script writing, level designing, or anything else).

This post officially marks the opening of the submission phase for Lyra's List #1. They will be compiled on May 1st. Depending on how many submissions are received, the deadline for Lyra's List #2 will be announced at that time.

If anyone has questions or ideas on how to improve this concept, be sure to let me know in the comments.
