Open gaming at Brimstone August 24th

Now that The Great Canadian Board Game Blitz is done it's back to our regular weekly schedule of events.

The Windsor Gaming resource returns to Brimstone Games on August 24th from 6pm until Midnight. Brimstone has a huge gaming area with tons of tables, chairs and great lighting. I'm told by the owner Sean that we could fit 60 of us in there.

This is an open, all ages, themeless gaming event. Just a bunch of us getting together to play some games. Magic the Gathering and Warhammer are popular at Brimstone along with the usual mix of card and board games

The Great Canadian Board Game Blitz Windsor 2013 Results

The 4th annual Great Canadian Board Game Blitz Windsor has come to a close.

We had a great event last night at The Green Bean downtown. 28 local gamers came out, breaking our previous record of 24 players.

A great time was had by all.

3rd Place - Chris Ball
4th Place - Michael Easterbrook
5th Place - Ryan Patrick

The Great Canadian Board Game Blitz returns to Windsor

August 17th The Great Canadian Board Game Blitz returns to Windsor Ontario.

This all day, no elimination, five round board game tournament will be hosted at The Green Bean Cafe's downtown location, otherwise known as The Windsor Star News Cafe, on the third floor of 300 Outlette Ave in the Windsor Star's new offices (the old Palace Theater). The event will run from Noon until 9pm. Doors will open at 11am.

For this years event we will have five rounds:

Round 1 - 1 hour
Round 2 - 1 hour
Round 3 - 1.5 hours
Dinner 1 hour
Round 4 - 1.5 hours
Final Round - 2 hours

Each round players will score points based on their ranking in the game. These points are weighted by the game length (so you get more points for winning a 2 hour game than a 1 hour game). At the end of the event prizes will be awarded based on points earned.

The player with the highest total will win a day pass to FanExpo Canada to participate in the Great Canadian Board Game Blitz Finals. Additional prizes will be awarded for first through fifth place. There will also be a ton door prizes (possibly enough for everyone to walk out with something).

The cost to participate in this Blitz is $5. 100% of the proceeds are going towards prizes. The more people that enter the better the prize pool will be.

This will be the fourth time we have hosted a Great Canadian Board Game Blitz here in Windsor. Each previous event has been awesome and we've seen more and more people out ever year. We've got room for 40 people so let's make 2013 a record year.

Cards and Coffee at Hugin & Munin August 10th

August 10th we head over to long time FLGS Hugin & Munin for a night of cards and caffeine. The event will run from 5pm until 11pm. Through the entirety of the event all Tassimo coffee will be half off.

This event has proved to be very popular so you may want to show up a bit early as the place gets packed and we run out of chairs quickly.

Now I know the event is called Cards & Coffee but you don't have to stick to card games. Feel free to bring and play what you want. This is an all ages event so feel free to bring some young gamers out as well.

Gaming in Windsor in July

July 6th Cards & Comics at Hugin & Munin

July 12th Games & Grub at the Green Bean Downtown 

The Green Bean on the West End by the University has proven to be our most popular gaming venue. Unfortunately due to relying on the University for business they close early on Fridays for the Summer. This summer is a bit different though as the Green Bean has just opened up a new 2nd location!

The new Green Bean is located right Downtown Windsor, in the 300 block of Ouelette in the new Windsor Star Building, which used to be the Palace Theater. The actual address is 300 Ouellette Ave - 3rd floor.

You can expect the same great food and atmosphere we grew to love at the West end location just with a new view. There's no theme for this event, just bring whatever you feel like playing. If you don't have very many games don't worry the regulars always bring lots of great stuff and all of us are willing to teach the games we bring. 

This all ages event runs from 6pm until 11pm on Friday July the 12th.

July 20th Bits & Boards @ Brimstone

We just wrapped up a great Brimstone event last night at Windsor's newest FLGS. Brimstone has a huge gaming area with tons of tables, chairs and great lighting. I'm told by the owner Sean that we could fit 60 of us in there. 

This is another open, themeless gaming event. Just a bunch of us getting together to play some games. Magic the Gathering and Warhammer are popular at Brimstone along with the usual mix of card and board games

You can find Brimstone at 3298 Walker Rd. Now that the construction has moved to the other side of Walker it's a bit easier to get to Brimstone. Parking is available on the south side of the building and on the street around back. This is another all ages event and it runs from 6pm until Midnight on Saturday July the 20th.

July 25th Boardgames Are Really Fun at Villains

Villians Beastro is one of the coolest bars to open here in Windsor. The theme is movie and TV Villains throughout the ages. The places is set up like a secret lair. What a perfect place for some gaming. 

B.A.R.F. events are themed events and we try to bring games that fit the theme. The theme for July is The Need for Speed. We will be looking for quick games or games with a racing theme. I'm looking forward to seeing Formula D, Thunder Road and maybe even Beat the Clock. Note, we're not going to bash you for not sticking to the theme, if you have a game you really want to play, feel free to bring it.

The event starts at 6 pm on July 25th and goes until close. Most gamers usually pack it in around midnight though as the place starts to fill with the downtown drinking crowd at about that time. Note also that since our event is on a Thursday that it's also SWAMP night and Steam Whistle beer and all Paninis are on sale.

Note this is not an all ages venue: Villains is a bar and serves alcohol so no kids for this one.

The Windsor Gaming Resource and Villains Beastro are proud to announce another awesome free gaming event scheduled for Thursday June 27th from 6pm until Midnight.

The Villains Beastro is a unique, funky, weird, mystical, fun, serious, laid back, Viking-feeling, pub-looking rock n’ roll type place that has offered to open their doors for us. It’s the perfect spot for a group of gamers to hang out and play some games. There are plenty of tables of all sizes, a well lit stage area, some great beers on draft, a selection of harder beverages and a some great tasting sandwiches. Villains has agreed to give us the space for free and I encourage everyone to support the venue by buying some food and enjoyed a drink (responsibly of course). One bonus of moving these events to Thursday is that it's also SWAMP night - so enjoy a Steam Whistle and Mouthwatering Panini at a discounted price.

The theme for this event is: Ancients. So I'm hoping to see games like Catan Histories: Struggle for Rome, Cleopatra And The Society of Architects, Tribune and more.

This is an open non-competitive gaming event that anyone is welcome to attend. Any form of game is welcome: board, card, rpg, miniatures, whatever you want to bring we are willing to have you. We aren't rule lawyers. You are welcome to bring your own games or share in some of ours. Everything we bring we are willing to teach and no experience is necessary. Brimstone games is the newest FLGS (Friendly Local Gaming Store) in Windsor. They were previously located out in the county in McGreggor. Their new location has a huge gaming area that I'm really hoping we can fill. The store is a games workshop specialty store and also caries a great selection of board games, card games and more.

This is an open non-competitive gaming event that anyone is welcome to attend. Any form of game is welcome: board, card, rpg, miniatures, whatever you want to bring we are willing to have you. Based on the venue I would not be surprised to see some Warhammer 40K players out.

We aren't rule lawyers. You are welcome to bring your own games or share in some of ours. Everything we bring we are willing to teach and no experience is necessary. The goal is to get as many local gamers out as possible to enjoy great games with other local gamers. Note this is a family friendly event. Gamers of all age are welcome. Please keep this in mind when choosing which games to bring. Please avoid bringing games like Cards Against Humanity or Bunsen Memo.

June 15th - Worldwide Dungeons and Dragons Game Day and Free RPG Day!

Saturday June 15th is a great day to be a roleplayer. Not only is it Worldwide Dungeons & Dragons Game Day, it's also Free RPG Day! Both of these events will be supported by FLGS Hugin & Munin

Worldwide Dungeons & Dragons Day

The D&D Vault of the Dracolich Game Day is a multi-table roleplaying event that brings communities of players together for a shared gaming experience.

Vault of the Dracolich is a D&D Next adventure designed for four to six 4th-level characters, in an epic quest to retrieve a magic item hidden away by a powerful dracolich. This adventure is intended to be playable in 2 to 5 hours at your local Wizards Play Network location.Players will be divided into multiple tables, each with their own Dungeon Master, with an event coordinator leading the action.

What Do I Need to Play?

This Game Day will run using the latest D&D Next playtest rules available for download at dndnext.com.

Playtest agreement sheets are included in the Game Day kit for players that do not sign up for the playtest before the event.

Deep in the forest of Cormanthor lies the hoard of the dracolich Dretchroyaster, the prize of which is a diamond staff rumored to unlock the secrets of an ancient elven kingdom. The sage Imani is seeking dozens of adventurers to launch an all-out assault on the undead dragon’s lair. The dracolich is a powerful foe—too great for even several parties to conquer—so it’s going to take all of the heroes’ courage, cunning, and speed to survive the dracolich’s deadly vault.

Vault of the Dracolich draws inspiration from the interactive format used at some gaming conventions. As part of this experience, players and DMs have the opportunity to communicate with other game tables, while the event coordinator takes on the role of the dracolich to menace each group.

Free RPG Day

Established in 2007, Free RPG Day works with participating hobby game retailers and RPG publishers to bring new and exclusive RPG quickstart rules and adventure modules into the hands of gamers.
Consumers WORLDWIDE will be able to grab brand new material for a variety of RPGs --- no overstock, retail-priced or dead product here. The goal of Free RPG Day is to inspire gamers to play a new RPG, which will in turn, create sales through local game stores.

D&D Encounters Search for the Diamond Staff starting June 12th

Dungeons & Dragons Encounters: Search for the Diamond Staff

Wednesdays; June 12, 2013 - August 14, 2013 at Hugin Munin at 6PM

Dungeons & Dragons Encounters™ is an exciting weekly program that brings players to your store to experience a D&D® campaign that plays out one epic encounter at a time. Players will defeat enemies, solve puzzles, and perform heroic deeds.

During this 10 week season, players will adventure in the Dalelands of the Forgotten Realms®. Their quest is to recover the Diamond Staff of Chomylla, a powerful elven artifact that’s been stolen by orcs. Each session only takes 1-2 hours to complete, so it’s easy for players to fit in a game after school or work. D&D Encounters is built so that players can jump in any time. It’s easy to get involved any Wednesday night.

We will be using D&D Next rules and everyone interested in participating must sign the NDA. In addition everyone is encouraged to download the latest set of playtest rules at http://www.wizards.com/dnd/DnDNext.aspx

From what I understand so far if you play in Worldwide D&D day on the 15th you can carry your character over to this event.

Everyone had a great and well caffeinated time on the 25th so we've decided to try to make this a monthly event. We're still working on the specifics but the next Cards & Coffee event will be June 8th. Again running from 5pm until 11pm.

Event though the theme is cards it's cool if you really want to play something else. At the last event people played: Citadels, Magic the Gathering, Dominion, Settlers of Catan, Red Dragon Inn, The Resistance and more.

The Windsor Gaming Resource is proud to announce another free Games and Grub gaming event at the Green Bean on Friday May 10th 2013, running from 6PM until 11PM.

The Green Bean is an independent coffee shop that provides a wide variety of coffees, teas, lattes and more. They have a full menu that includes fresh made soup, paninis and some really tempting deserts. There's the option for a bottomless cup of coffee and they have free WiFi. For us gamers they have a wide variety of tables of various sizes and a well lit stage.

This is an open non-competitive gaming event that anyone is welcome to attend. Any form of game is welcome: board, card, rpg, miniatures, whatever you want to bring we are willing to have you. Cards & Coffee - May 25th @ Hugin & Munin

Hugin & Munin has recently added a coffee drink and snack center to the store. To celebrate Ian suggested a Cards and Coffee gaming event. I never say no to a gaming event.

The event will be hosted at the store on Saturday May 25th from 5pm until 11pm. Throughout the event Bosch Tassimo Coffee will be half price!

Tap some Mana, assemble a Legendary team of heroes, expand your Dominion, work on an Eminent Domain, duel with Wizard, have an Epic Spell War, backstab a Munchkin all while being as caffeinated as possible.

Sure the theme is Cards & Coffee but if you want to show up and play some board games or a miniature game and drink some coke or Mt. Dew instead, we aren't going to stop you. It's more of an excuse to get people together gaming than anything else.

The WGR is joining up with The LAN of the Dead! - May 4th-5th

The Windsor Gaming resource is teaming up with the people behind LAN of the Dead 3 to provide tabletop gaming in addition to the fast and furious video gaming already on the schedule. WGR member Jason Russell has signed up for the long haul and will be there for the entire event. There will be a special Tabletop Lounge set up just for us old school gamers who like looking our opponents right in the eye as we crush their hopes of victory. Jason will be bringing a selection of great games including the hot new Star Wars X-Wing miniature game from Fantasy Flight.

The event runs from 10AM Saturday May 4th until 6PM on Sunday May 5th. Guests and gamers who just want to play some tabletop games are welcome to show up for free any time between 10AM and 11PM. After that though the Tabletop Lounge will be for paying event participants only.

In regards to the LAN party there are a wide variety of passes available  There's Bring Your Own Computer passes, Console Tournament Tickets and Spectator Passes. As one of the biggest LAN events in Ontario there will be over $2500 in cash and prizes up for grabs. B.A.R.F. - Boardgames Are Really Fun

The Windsor Gaming Resource and Villains Beastro are proud to announce another awesome free gaming event scheduled for Thursday April 25th from 6pm until Midnight. This will be our first Thursday night event. Remember there's a BARF event the 4th Thursday of every month.

The Villains Beastro is a unique, funky, weird, mystical, fun, serious, laid back, Viking-feeling, pub-looking rock n’ roll type place that has offered to open their doors for us. It’s the perfect spot for a group of gamers to hang out and play some games. There are plenty of tables of all sizes, a well lit stage area, some great beers on draft, a selection of harder beverages and a some great tasting sandwiches. Villains has agreed to give us the space for free and I encourage everyone to support the venue by buying some food and enjoyed a drink (responsibly of course). One bonus of moving these events to Thursday is that it's also SWAMP night - so enjoy a Steam Whistle and Mouthwatering Panini at a discounted price.

The theme for this event is: Free for all! I'll admit it, I've been uber busy and haven't given this event the attention it deserves. Part of that is not coming up with a proper theme. Actually based on the last few events and how many games people bring that aren't in theme, maybe I will ditch the whole theme thing entirely? What do you think about this, let me  know by posting below.

This is an open non-competitive gaming event that anyone is welcome to attend. Any form of game is welcome: board, card, rpg, miniatures, whatever you want to bring we are willing to have you. We aren't rule lawyers. You are welcome to bring your own games or share in some of ours. Everything we bring we are willing to teach and no experience is necessary. The goal is to get as many local gamers out as possible to enjoy some good food, some good company and some good games! We are not a private club. Anyone and everyone is welcome to come out and join in the games. If you see someone playing a game and it looks interesting, ask about it. If you see a game on a table and you want to try it out, ask around and see if someone will teach it.

Boards & Bits @ Brimstone - April 20th

The Windsor Gaming Resource and Brimstone Games are proud to announce another our first gaming event at Brimstone's new location being held on April 20th from 6pm until Midnight.

Brimstone games is the newest FLGS (Friendly Local Gaming Store) in Windsor. They were previously located out in the county in McGreggor. Their new location has a huge gaming area that I'm really hoping we can fill. The store is a games workshop specialty store and also caries a great selection of board games, card games and more.

This is an open non-competitive gaming event that anyone is welcome to attend. Any form of game is welcome: board, card, rpg, miniatures, whatever you want to bring we are willing to have you. Based on the venue I would not be surprised to see some Warhammer Players out.

We aren't rule lawyers. You are welcome to bring your own games or share in some of ours. Everything we bring we are willing to teach and no experience is necessary. The goal is to get as many local gamers out as possible to enjoy great games with other local gamers.

Games we've played in the past include: Blood bowl, King of Tokyo, Warmachine, Settlers of Catan, Agricola, Magic The Gathering, Quarriors! and more.

An important note: we are not a private club. Anyone and everyone is welcome to come out and join in the games. If you see someone playing a game and it looks interesting, ask about it. If you see a game on a table and you want to try it out, ask around and see if someone will teach it.

Games and Grub at the Green Bean April 12th

The Windsor Gaming Resource is proud to announce another free Games and Grub gaming event at the Green Bean on Friday April 12th 2013, running from 6PM until 11PM.

The Green Bean is an independent coffee shop that provides a wide variety of coffees, teas, lattes and more. They have a full menu that includes fresh made soup, paninis and some really tempting deserts. There's the option for a bottomless cup of coffee and they have free WiFi. For us gamers they have a wide variety of tables of various sizes and a well lit stage.

International Tabletop Day - March 30th

Saturday March 30th is International Tabletop Day. This event is sponsored by +Wil Wheaton's Tabletop YouTube channel which is part of the Geek & Sundry series of shows.

Sounds awesome doesn't it? So how can you take part? Well the Windsor Gaming Resource and Hugin and Munin have teamed up to provide an all day long gaming event. The store will be opening at noon on the 30th and won't close it's doors until 10pm.

Throughout the day you can expect a huge range of gaming goodness. There's going to be a table for miniature gamers which will showcase some great newer games like Malifaux. There's going to be a huge variety of board games available to check out and play including TableTop favorites like Catan, Gloom and Small World. There will be people on hand to teach you how to play these games. You are also welcome to bring your favorite game. Through the day there will be give aways as well. There will be stuff going all all afternoon and into the night so show up when you can and stay as long as you like.
