Text Adventures: My Little Time Killer/Welcome to Dream Valley

Text adventures? Why not? It's been a lazy week so far - two today to stave off the August blues.

My Little Time Killer takes place aboard a space station (see, the header image is at least tangentially relevant) and the goal is to fill time and stave off boredom between the station's many conveniences. Fortunately, between the holodeck, simulated combat system, growing crops, and chatting up your fellow astronauts, there's plenty to do. (Caution: Shipping and a little T-rated humor.)

Welcome to Dream Valley is currently abandoned, but like its sibling features a full combat system and is significantly more complicated than your run-of-the-mill text adventure. Playing as a Unicorn, Pegasus, Earth Pony, or Unicorn, hone your skills while exploring Dream Valley!

Map of Equestria (Flash)

Map of Equestria
Although this program by futzi01 (pony flash game maker nonpareil) isn't technically a "game" per se, it's quite handy and elegantly programmed (plus I love maps). So here it is. This nifty piece of Flash takes the Official Map of Equestria Season 2 poster and gives you a little blurb from the location's MLP Wiki page upon hovering with your mouse. Also, clicking on a location will link you to the full article. With new locations and information being added as it is called for, this program is quite helpful for anyone who wants to get a sense of Equestria as a whole.

MLP Online Demo Update 8/21/11

MLP Online is a fan made My Little Pony Friendship is Magic MMO, currently being produced by Urimas, Salty Justice, and their team of programmers, spriters, and other members in a custom made C++ engine. The project has been in development for a while now, and when finished, will be 100% free to play.

The MMO is still in its early stages, but a lot of the features are already nearing completion The game currently has eight different movement directions, functional NPCs, flying, bucking (Kicking objects around) and several maps.

Currently, the sprites are a major developing point in the project, many different sprite sheets have been made for the mane cast and many other ponies who will be in the game. You can find a demo showing the current progress of the game HERE.

The battle system is currently being worked on, you can play a short demo of what it might look like HERE.
The team is also working on scripted events, allowing for small cut-scenes to take place, as seen below.

A short video demonstration of the battle system

Currently, only Ponyville and Sweet Apple Acres are the two completed maps, and Fluttershy's cottage is being worked on. There will be many other maps in the near future, allowing players to fully explore Equestria.

MLP:Online Alpha 009 Demonstration

Urimas has released a small Sprite Test game, though he says the test is not an actual part of the game engine itself, and is just a temporary way of showing people what the team has achieved so far.

The Sprites shown are the walking and running sprites, though there are trotting, jumping, flying and bucking sprites also completed.

If you're looking to join the production team for this game, there is a section on the forums HERE that lists all the different open positions, though if there's something that's not there that you want to help with, sending Urimas a friendly message asking about it probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

The game is in its early stages, so feeback is welcome, you can give some feedback about already implemented features HERE or suggest new ideas for the game HERE.

Salty Justice also does daily reports on the game's progress, if you want to follow up with that, the topic can be found HERE.

Games & Grab at the Green Bean Windsor Star Cafe Sept 13th

The new Green Bean is located right Downtown Windsor, in the 300 block of Ouelette in the new Windsor Star Building, which used to be the Palace Theater. The actual address is 300 Ouellette Ave - 3rd floor. The actual name is The Winsdor Star Cafe by The Green Bean and I know this has caused a bit of confusion in the past.

There's no theme for this event, just bring whatever you feel like playing. If you don't have very many games don't worry the regulars always bring lots of great stuff and all of us are willing to teach the games we bring.

This all ages event runs from 6pm until 11pm on Friday September 13th

MoonLight game looking for team members

That video thumbnail may be confusing, but rest assured the topic of the video is indeed ponies. The team working on a game called MoonLight are looking for new members to help in the making of the game. Below the break I will put the details as to what they're looking for right now.

First of all, what kind of video game is this? Well, the director of the game has defined it as 2.5D action-adventure platformer that will focus on exploration, reflexes and player intelligence. It is being made in the Unity 3D engine.

Now, since the list of things they're looking for is quite large, I'm only going to mention some of them, but you can find the whole list as well as a lot more information about the game Right Here.

The main things they are searching for right now are concept artists and sprite animators.

The team is looking for one or two more writers. They want the story to be engaging to the player, a funny and endearing tale for them to explore.

They're looking for programmers that are efficient and fluent in Unity 3D's various languages, especially those with knowledge of 2.5D platforming and related subjects.

And they're also looking for 3D modelers fluent in designing environments, and some specific creatures.

These are only a few of the things they're looking for. They're also looking for musicians and sound effect creators, as well as even playtesters, so if you think there's something you can contribute to the game and you want to be a part of it, go ahead and contact the creator at moonswirly@gmail.com.

MLP: Roleplaying is Magic Seeking Testing Groups for S4e

The dedicated team behind MLP: Roleplaying is Magic is gearing up for the Season 4 edition of their popular tabletop system! Seems like just the other day they were releasing Season 3.

Right now, the team's seeking applications for groups of play-testers interested in playing the game as it develops and skyping in some feedback. If that sounds like you, hit them up with an application!

TEMNO: The Prologue

An image from TEMNO.

Along with the release of TEMNO's new website, one can find that the game's prologue has been released. It is mainly intended as a demo to teach players how the story works and contains little when it comes to story-related content, so...yeah. I wrote a "first impressions" article on it, but decided that there wasn't much of a point in doing so with such a beastly headache. Perhaps it's from listening to a little too much heavy metal or something (if there is such a thing as too much metal, of course). Shame the pills don't help...

Anyhow, I'll stop rambling about unrelated things and let you check out the demo while I wait around for Taylor. Enjoy!

September 6th - Brimstone Boardgame Night - Featuring Tash Kalar

The Windsor Gaming resource returns to Brimstone Games on Saturday September 6th as part of their twice monthly boardgame night which hits on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. These events run from 5pm to 10pm and are open to all ages.

Brimstone is working to become Windsor's premier board game shop. They've got a great selection of the hottest games and tons of gaming space to play them. Not only that but all board games are currently 30% off!

Win a Board Game!

Every Board Game Night at 8pm the store will draw 1 ticket and the winner will receive a free board game!

Players earn 1 ticket for playing games, limit of 1 ticket per night. Earn 1 ticket for purchasing a snack or drink, limit 1 ticket per night. Earn 1 ticket for bringing 1 or more board games for people to play. Earn 5 tickets for each board game purchased. First time players will receive 5 additional tickets.

You can find Brimstone at 3298 Walker Rd. Parking is available on the south side of the building and on the street around back. Note that Brimstone used to be located in McGregor. This is no longer the case, they moved into Windsor just over a year ago.

Featured Game: Tash Kalar: Arena of Legends

The featured game this week is: Tash Kalar: Arena of Legends from Vlaada Chvatil and Chech Games Edition.

Tash Kalar is a very interesting abstract strategy game. Each player takes on the role of a wizard who is competing against other wizards in an arena battle. The wizards aren't fighting each other though instead they are using this clay like stuff to form monsters to battle each other and control the battlefield.

The game is quite a bit of a thinker as players try to position their playing pieces into the proper patterns to summon the right monsters.

There are a few different ways to play and this Saturday I'll be showing off any that people want to try. I personally thought this game was a cool mix of The Duke with an arena battle game.

Slowing Down

Yes, I realize that this website has slowed down greatly in the amount of things it's been posting. But I have a reason, and hopefully soon it will be fixed.

As most of you know, college/school for everyone is starting up, my college already started a week ago, so I've been overscheduled with classes and work. On top of that, we're about to be hit by a Hurricaine, and I have no idea if our power will last through it.

The thing is, I need yours guys to help me until I can find the time to search around for all these things.
If you find anything My Little Pony and Video Game related, ANYTHING at all, please email me about it.
It can be a new guild somewhere that's popped up, a game  you heard from a friend, or even something that was posted on Equestria Daily! But I need you guys to submit these things, I know this may sound a little demanding, but I really can't afford the time to do this all on my own.

I would much rather have 10 people email me about the same game, than to miss it all together.

MLP: Rise of Vicis Demo

Download it Here!
Demos, demos everywhere. Speaking of demos, here's the demo for MLP: Rise of Vicis by Negation Squared Productions, which was released some time ago to give us a sense of how the game will work. Rise of Vicis is an expansive adventure/platformer game currently in the works, and in this demo, you get a chance to play as each of the Mane 6, each with their own unique mechanics, on their way to a picnic thrown by Pinkie Pie.

This game, made in GameMaker 8, definitely has promise. The plan for Rise of Vicis is very expansive, spanning eight worlds as the Mane 6 seek to regain their cutie marks and defeat the titular villain, Vicis. All in all, it's a nice demo, but the real meat of the game is still to come. You can check out a bit more about the project in development on their Facebook page.

Pinkie Pie's Perilous Platforms Demo

That's right - the demo for Pinkie Pie's Perilous Platforms (a very promising platformer by Sylver's Edge currently in the works) has been released for us to play. Four special demo levels to be exact, which demonstrate the game's mechanics in their current state.

My overall impressions of the game are quite positive, even though the demo content is said to not be indicative of the final product. The goal of each stage in the demo is to simply collect all of the bits before time runs out. Featuring smooth mechanics and an upbeat 8-bit soundtrack by RainbowCrash88, I have high hopes for this game, and look forward to its release! You can check out the game's second trailer above.

Cards & Coffee September 7th

September 7th we head over to long time FLGS Hugin & Munin for a night of cards and caffeine. The event will run from 5pm until 11pm. Through the entirety of the event all Tassimo coffee will be half off.

This event has proved to be very popular so you may want to show up a bit early as the place gets packed and we run out of chairs quickly.

Yeah it's called Cards & Coffee and yes some people dig playing Dominion or Magic but you don't need to stick to card games. It's just an excuse to spend a Saturday night playing some games. It also happens that Tassimo coffee is half off.

This is an all ages event that is open to anyone and everyone. Bring your favourite game or play one of ours. No XP needed, we'll teach you what we have.

Hugin & Munin is located at 1664 Tecumseh RD. E. in Windsor Ontario. Parking in back or on side roads and free out front after 6pm.

Game: Ponysweeper

I could marvel at the ever-expanding list of ponified games, but to be honest, I'm not even surprised any more. Minesweeper. Ponies. Ponified Minesweeper. What took you guys so long?

Ponysweeper is exactly what it says on the tin. Playing as Twilight, excavate a garden full of handily numbered cabbages/eggs/watermelons while avoiding the buried changelings. Board size and number of changelings can be modified in settings, and I can't complain about the execution. Have at it!

Demo: Magic Shards Remake

There are times when Church Crusade of Darkera Studios is unable to do much more work on Rise of the Clockwork Stallions (such as when they are designing levels), so in his spare time he's been working on a remake of Magic Shards to keep him sharp. At first I wasn't so sure that this was a good idea, but now that I've actually had a chance to see it I'm rather impressed. Aside from several bugs, which are to be expected from a pre-release demo, the project is superior to the original in nearly every way. The creator really has improved a lot over the course of the past year; I'm quite interested in getting the chance to review this updated version in the future.

And yes, the demo doesn't have that Canterlot -3 bug that prevented Windows 8 users from proceeding any further in the original. Much rejoicing will be had amongst the few that use it.

Rise of the Clockwork Stallions BUCK Edition

Rise of the Clockwork Stallions

As a promotion for ongoing BUCK convention, Darkera Studios has decided to release a special demo for Rise of the Clockwork Stallions, along with a trailer featuring art from the talented DragonGirl983. Thing is, given that this is a special demo you only have until Tuesday, August 27th to download it before the link is taken down, so you should probably pick it up as soon as possible. There's also a fancy wallpaper for those of us whose desktops lack six-eyed robots, which can be found here.

There's also a trailer for their Magic Shards remake, but it deserves its own dedicated post so I'll put it up later.

Filly Gamez at BronyCon

Filly Gamez

Conveniently, a video of Filly Gamez's BronyCon panel was just released on Youtube, in which they finally admit the truth about their shutting down (which had to do with that unofficial Flash port we posted a while back) and showcase some footage from their new game, A Foal's Errand. Unlike their previous effort it actually appears to be pretty good, although unfortunately there's no indication as to when it will be released online.

There used to be some other stuff in this post, but I removed it for being flamewar bait.

Boardgames Are Really Fun - August 29th

August 29th Boardgames Are Really Fun at Villains

Villians Beastro is one of the coolest bars to open here in Windsor. The theme is movie and TV Villains throughout the ages. The places is set up like a secret lair. What a perfect place for some gaming.

B.A.R.F. events are themed events and we try to bring games that fit the theme. The theme for July is The Orient. We will be looking for quick games or games with an Oriental theme. Stuff like Cheng Chang, Shogun and Samurai. Note, we're not going to bash you for not sticking to the theme, if you have a game you really want to play, feel free to bring it.

The event starts at 6 pm on August 29th and goes until close. Most gamers usually pack it in around midnight though as the place starts to fill with the downtown drinking crowd at about that time. Note also that since our event is on a Thursday that it's also SWAMP night and Steam Whistle beer and all Paninis are on sale.

Note this is not an all ages venue: Villains is a bar and serves alcohol so no kids for this one.

MLP:FiM - Pony Creator Finished

MLP: FiM - Pony Creator is an advanced Pony creator programed in flash by generalzoi.

This game has no goal, allowing you to fully customize a pony of your own. Unlike other Pony creators, this one is extremely extensive! You can choose from a wide scale of different sizes and shapes for your pony, randing from filly to Slenderpony height. The colors for your pony's mane, coat, and tail are all full color scale. There are a bunch of different head shapes as well, allowing you to create either a male or a female pony. A full selection of Eyes, Expressions, mouthes, manes and tales, a cutie mark creator, custom poses, and accessories really makes this game stand out.

When playing this, I experienced very few problems, the only one worth mentioning was dealing with the eye location. When the eye is really small, it gets 'stuck' on the edge where it can't go any further. This isn't a major problem, because you're still able to move it with your mouse, it just doesn't go as far as some might hope.

Too lazy to color correctly. Or find the right mane/tail.

The game really does come with a lot of customization, and after it's 'completion', it comes fully loaded with a pose function, where you can either choose from a list of preset poses, or pose each limb on it's own. You're also able to export the pony in png image format with a transparent background. You can also save it as a high quality image, though due to some strange coding bugs, both export buttons may not work at times, he is currently looking for a solution to this minor problem (I only had problems with the high res so far).

The game also includes a number/letter import/export function, so you can share your pony design, or save your pony design for later editing! Though please don't spam the comments with your pony designs. That's what DeviantArt is for.

This game was made very well, and even though it might seem a little complex at first, the tutorial and guide definitely helped, and was jam-packed with different customization features. This game runs very smooth, but being the game it is, I cannot  put a rating on it. So have Insane Pinkie and Flootershoi instead.

Review: Drifter

Silly Mare Games, SylrePony and others have joined forces, attempting to synthesize the best elements from several of their previous games. Drifter's a spiritual successor to Stroll and Derpy Buddy, among others, and comes from some of the same folks currently working on the Nightfall project.

Derpy Hooves must travel to the ends of the earth, and if you want to find out why, you'll have to lead her there. Find the review after the break!

If you're familiar with Drifter's precursors, you'll know not to expect points, combo multipliers, or other forms of rapid gratification from this game. However, while Drifter's certainly centered on artsy ambiance, it swings a little more toward the goal-driven side of things. Character maintenance is relatively important: Derpy's health, happiness, and energy levels must be maintained by eating food, meeting ponies, and taking regular naps. However, these stats generally don't warrant attention, as Derpy eats when she stops moving and sleeps when her energy bar falls to zero (although you'll take a small happiness penalty.)

As in Stroll, the goal of the game is to discover the various ponies hidden throughout the landscape. However, when you come upon them, they don't just sit there - instead, they'll disappear into the night after giving you a unique perk. Although the game doesn't tell you directly how Derpy's skill set has improved, names like "Double Food Perk" and "Half Fatigue Perk" are fairly self-explanatory.

Rather than controlling Derpy directly, the player must lead her around by moving the camera and waiting for her to follow. Although this can be cumbersome early in the game, once mastered it's an efficient way of moving her around - and it prevents Derpy from falling off a cliff by accident. After loading the game, make sure to locate the dot of tinted pixels in the center of your screen. That's the center of the camera, and it can't phase through walls any more than Derpy can. If the camera won't move, the central dot is usually stuck against an obstacle.

Twilight spends many a peaceful afternoon reading in the bowels of hell.

The game would be nothing without the eerie, meditative ambiance which sold me on Stroll - and fortunately, it's there in spades. It's impossible to tell whether the game's atmosphere comes from the music, the misty graphics and particle effects, or some combination of the two. My only artistic complaint is the ground texturing near the surface, which transitions awkwardly between several patterns.

The game becomes truly creepy when Derpy approaches the lair of a hunter, a mysterious creature that inhabits the game world deep underground. When you've ticked one off, the music is saturated by heavy, ominous bass beats while shafts of glaring red light herald the beast's pursuit. Fortunately, your progress is autosaved and discovered ponies serve as respawn points.

I played Drifter expecting to fault it for a confusingly large map, incoherent story-line, and repetitive gameplay, but was happily surprised. If you need an exploration aid, it's fairly easy to locate yourself by means of the included world map (at least, until you slip past the first hunters into uncharted territory.) While the game sometimes spreads itself thinly between a variety of mysteries, there were more than enough poignant moments along the way to keep my interest.

Overall, the game continuously impressed, and takes a solid place among my personal favorites. After a lengthy debate with myself, I decided on a score that, while debatable, reflects my impressions.

Luna Game End (CREEPYPASTA)

One year and a week after the release of Luna Game 0, the creator of the Luna Game series has finally given us another game; the final game of the series: Luna Game End. The name is short but sweet; at long last the true end to the series has been released, but is it all that we could hope for? That’s up to you to decide.

Luna Game End (Luna Game 5) is the direct sequel to Luna Game 4. If you haven’t already played Luna Game, Luna Game 2, Luna Game 3, Luna Game 4, and Luna Game 0, you might want to familiarize yourself with those game now.

DOWNLOAD GAME HERE

WARNING: SPOILERS - IF YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GAME, CLICK THE LINK ABOVE

The game starts you off as the well-known Princess Luna, standing on a flat strip of grass at night with happy music playing in the background. After a short amount of walking, you’re greeted with an oh so familiar cliff. Though this time when you jump off it you safely land on the ground. After a bit more walking Luna begins to slow down, and eventually the text “I’m really tired” appears over her head. She collapses a moment later, stating “I’ll just rest for a moment…”. The screen slowly fades to black afterwards.

After the music stops, you suddenly appear in a completely white world with only a single black line as the ground below you. Walk to the right some and you’ll spot an 8-bit limbo sprite from Luna Game 4 going nuts in the air. Touching it will cause strange background sounds to start and the ground below you to disappear, but fear not, you don’t fall long before hitting some kind of invisible ground. After walking to the right more, you start to notice sky blocks and ground blocks appearing in a random order, eventually building an entire sky behind you. After another few moments, a strange screech sound in the same style as the odd background sounds will play, and the floor will disappear again. This time when you fall, the blue sky turns into an empty, dark red sky as a different creepy soundtrack plays.

After you hit the ground again, you’re greeted with ground blocks with a similar line design to that in Luna Game 4’s hell stage. Continuing to walk right will reveal a smaller cliff (one from which you can see the bottom too), and jumping of that will trigger the ground blocks to randomly start turning into the 8-bit limbo blocks from Luna Game 4, the second soundtrack in the 8-bit limbo world (Incoming Darkness) to play, and the dark shadow to start eating up the screen to your left. If you don’t hurry up, the shadow will immediately eat you up and take you to the next map. If you manage to outrun it, you’re greeted with several obstacle courses, but the result in the end is the same. (Though how do you does affect the Game’s ending).

After the darkness takes you to the next room, you find Luna lying back down on the ground from the first scene where she took a nap. Really low, creepy music starts slowly playing, and after a moment she stands up (or if you press a key) and holding shift is disabled. Walking to the right will reveal some shadow ponies, the silhouettes of Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Applejack can all be found, as well as an unknown filly. Walking next to some of the ponies triggers text above their heads. At random moments static will flash across the screen, as well as playing white noise. When this happens, the text above the ponies’ heads will change, and the silhouettes of all the ponies except for the filly will change back into their original sprites, though lacking any pupils. The static only lasts a moment, and after walking all the way to the right of the screen, the static does not happen again and you’re able to run. After walking a while back to the left, you’re greeted by Nightmare Moon, where you lose control over Luna. Another creepy song starts playing at this point, accompanied by a heartbeat. As Luna walks towards Nightmare Moon, loud static plays once, flashing fan art of the previous Luna Games. This happens one more time before you reach Nightmare Moon, and when you do the screen goes black.

If you died before reaching the end with the darkness, the game will end for you at this point, otherwise you are taken to another place.

The background is completely black, but as you move, cracks start appearing in the ground below you, and it disappears after being completely cracked. Your only option is to go right at this point, and when the ground below you is gone, you’re shown another path just below where you were that continues right. From this point on, you just go as far right as you can, but in the end you will always fall. Once you fall, Luna is replaced with Nightmare moon for a split second as static and white noise play, and after another moment you hear a splat and the screen goes black. Slowly the screen fades back in and you see the same dead Luna from Luna Game 3, except instead of another screamer, the game just closes itself.

There is also another ending, a 'good end'. You can achieve this by completing both Luna Game 4 and Luna Game 0, getting the good end in 4 is necessary.

HERE is a youtube playthrough of the game.

HERE is a youtube playthrough of the Good End.

Updates: Ponyplace/Nightfall Beta 2

http://www.deviantart.com/art/Scootaloo-the-Courier-278650955

Scootaloo's bringing the news! That, or I needed an excuse to use this vector.

Important updates from the Ponyplace and Nightfall projects after the break!

After a long hiatus, Ponyplace is back! The layout of rooms and character selection is much the same, but accounts are now handled through your gmail via Mozilla Persona.

When I logged on, the site seemed much better regulated than its former incarnation, with several mods patrolling the chat rooms. Whether you'd care to try out the new classroom minigame or just shoot the breeze, it's worth a look!

Hot on the heels of the original, Nightfall's second beta release is here! It's always nice to see frequent updates of a game incorporating gamer feedback, and bodes well for the project's success in the future. Notable upgrades include ten more nights, doubling the original number, and a new mercenary system. Also added are some new keyboard controls and several balancing measures.

For more screenshots and a full list of new stuff, check out the release post and give the game a whirl!

Brony Day Terraria Giveaway! Deadline Change!

Me and a BUNCH of other sites are getting together and hosing 7 different contests for 7 copies of Terraria!
You can find the post on EqD here: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/07/brony-day-2015-festivites-around.html
So here is my contest:

16-Bit Game Contest

Contest Details:
Make an 16-bit styled game with ponies!

Rules:
1. Sprites MUST be 16-bit (or less)
2. The music can be anything, it doesn't have to be 16-bit, though it would fit best.
3. The deadline is September 15th (As of now, is still subject to change).
4. Send the finished game to strawberryspice@ymail.com
5. The title of the email should be "Game Contest"
6. You should include the author of the game, and preferably sources to your materials.

Due to some confusion, only the sprites have to be 16-bit styled. It doesn't matter what you use to make it as long as it looks 16-bit.

Have those games come right to me! If you want, a good source to 16-bit pony sprites is the Desktop Ponies program.

Happy Brony Day!

TCG: As I Recall

The card games are multiplying! Just a few weeks ago, they were practically off my radar.

As I Recall: Friendship is Magic is set in a universe where Equestria has been blasted out of existence. As a human, you must use your memories of characters and events within the show (represented by cards) to restore Equestria to the way it used to be.

To play, each player must first build a deck (ideally, one affiliated with a certain Element of Harmony) from the 360+ cards provided. At the beginning of the game, players must build up their supplies of the Elements, which act as mana pools and enable them to play ponies and items. While hindering your opponents is a valid strategy, the game revolves around reaching the 30 harmony points needed for victory. Enjoy!

The Spoils is not dead and has a cool new beginner box

The Basic Box of Awesomeness
A few weeks back I was approached by John Westcott about The Spoils Trading Card Game. It seems Arcane Tinmen has just released something new they are calling the Basic Box of Awesomeness.

This email surprised me. Why? Well I remember seeing The Spoils, like 8 or so years ago at RIW Hobbies in Livonia. They were doing some kind of demo deal. It looked like a Magic the Gathering clone. I never heard about or saw the game again. I assumed it died the same death that most Magic isotopes died.

I guess I was wrong. Seems the game is still going strong and has a new box out there. So I agreed to check it out. I figured if it lasted the CCG glut there must be something there.

Since receiving my review copy of the box I've brought the game out to a couple different local events and played eight games with four different players all who have a varying level of experience with collectible card games. I wasn't able to find someone locally who had never played Magic though, so that tainted all of our opinions.

So what is The Spoils?

As I noted above it's one of many Magic the Gathering knock offs. I'm sure Arcane Tinmen hate to hear that but I've got to call a spade a spade here. A lot of the game play of The Spoils is identical to Magic but with different names. Magic has flying, The Spoils has Covert. Magic has Mana, The Spoils has Resources. Magic has tapping, The Spoils has Depleting Cards. Etc. That said, there are quite a few things unique to The Spoils and I ended up rather enjoying these differences.

This starter set comes with basic decks for five factions. Each of these factions is very distinct and each plays very differently. I really enjoyed the art on the cards and the flavour text. I loved that the Banker faction were a bunch of Fat Cats, literally: they are all anthropomorphic cats. Each faction deck includes faction specific Resources. These are interesting things like Greed and Deception. Again; very thematic.

After you've got your deck you pick who goes first. Your faction card (in this set each faction had the same faction card, "The Tournament Faction", lame) tells you how many cards you start with which depends on if you play first or second. It also gives you a couple basic abilities and works like a rule summary card. Oh, it also sets your life Influence. You run out of Influence you loose.

You start the game with two Mana Resources in play, and each turn you have to decide if you want to play one more or if you want to draw a card. This rule I liked and did make The Spoils stick out as somewhat unique right from the start. Another neat Spoils deal is that you can play any card in your hand face down as a resource.

To play non-resource cards you 'attach' Resources to your Faction Card based on their cost which is at the top left of the cards. There's another kinda of neat bit where you don't have to spend specific Resources, but have to have a minimum of the right type in play to pay some cards. So if a card shows three Rage symbols, you just have to have three Rage Resources in play. They can be attached already or not spent yet, it doesn't matter. As long as you have them you can play the card.

The cards are Characters, which you use to attack and defend. Tactics which are like instants and do something cool and then are discarded. Items which you attach to characters and locations and modify them in some way. Locations are the one card that is not-quite Magic like. They are like Artificats that have hit points. They go into play and stay there until destroyed. They can be attacked and if they take more damage than their Structure they are removed from play.

There are a ton of keywords in The Spoils. Some which play very similar if not identical to other CCGs. For example Covert characters can only be blocked by other Cover characters. There are some very unique ones too like Flip Up, which lets you take a card you played as a resource and flip it over to the other side and put it in play as if you just played it from your hand.

At this point the game is pretty much like any other CCG. You play your Resources, you spend them to put cards in play. You get Characters and permanents out there and you try to beat the crap out of your opponent. When one of you runs out of life Influence, the game is over.

Combat is probably the thing that's the most different from other card games I've played. You don't only get one attack phase in The Spoils. You can choose to attack with a Character, then play a couple more cards, then attack with two more Characters, then play a Tactic then attack again. This really opens up the strategy of the game. Added to this each Character has a Speed stat in addition to the usual attack/defense (Attack/Life in The Spoils). Speed adds an initiative system to the game. Cards with the same Speed are grouped and cards with higher Speed do damage before cards with lower Speeds. A heavy Magic playing friend of mine called this "multiple First Strikes".

In addition to the five faction decks that came in the box, there was also a selection of Foil cards. One of each of the Resources and then one card for each of the factions. While pretty, I'm just not a fan of the collectible aspect of chase cards like these. I do know some people dig them though.

So what did I think?

I had quite a bit of fun playing The Spoils. While we did have one game where one faction completely destroyed the other, the other games all seemed pretty well balanced. I really dig the factions and the theme of this game. I actually prefer it over the whole Planeswalker thing from Magic the Gathering. I was laughing out loud as I was reading the flavour text. Doing things like playing the Bankers and putting a tax on attacking was awesome.

I was also a fan of some of the new things from The Spoils. Stuff I haven't seen in other card games. Things like being able to play any card in your hand as a resource and the initiative system for combat. The one problem though is that all these new things ads a level of complexity to the game that makes it not only harder to teach but also longer as there is more to consider each turn. While this can appeal at times, sometimes you just want quick and easy.

The big question I kept asking myself was: why not just play Magic?

Magic is quicker and easier with less complexity but still a very satisfying level of strategy. It's less fiddly then The Spoils. Magic is also everywhere. I could jump on facebook right now and be playing with someone local within 10 minutes. I don't know anyone local who plays The Spoils. There's no Friday Night Spoils, but there are five different local stores that do Friday Night Magic. There's a tournament in town every weekend. Magic is everywhere. The Spoils is not.

While I did dig The Big Box of Awesome, and I think The Spoils actually a rather good game, I  just can't see getting into the full game. If you are interested in a solid alternative to Magic The Gathering I think this is worth checking out. I think you will have fun playing with just this box. However I can't see it becoming The CCG for anyone.

Trailer: Rise of the Ponies

A few days back, we received this little trailer for Rise of the Ponies, a sandbox RPG set in a side-scrolling Equestrian landscape. The trailer features a brown, sword-wielding earth pony exploring the landscape and hacking up a few baddies - and little else, as the game is still in pre-alpha. Still, the spriting and gameplay look promising. Give it a watch!

Oh, and the team's seeking help - so if you're an interested musician, sound artist, or writer, contact mirtorande (at) gmail.com.

Quest of Memories Cutscene Demo

My Little Pony: Quest of Memories

For a while now there has been a visual novel-style game in the works with the title My Little Pony: Quest of Memories. We didn't bother to give them a post since they didn't really have much to show for their project, but now that they've released a demo showing off the cutscenes we figured that we might as well give 'em the post they wanted. I'm not a really big fan of visual novels, but I hear that some of you folks like them so we thought you might be interested in this.

Enjoy (hopefully)!

EQG at Everfree Wrap-up

Successful con? Definitely.

A huge round of brohoofs to all of you who turned out and made Everfree Northwest a rousing success! Everyone we met was cheerful and upbeat, and even if you didn't run into our little delegation, we hope you had a fantastic time.

Pony gaming was in full swing at the 24-hour gaming room when we arrived, and between Super Smash Bros., karaoke, ponified games of Magic: the Gathering and the Fighting is Magic leaked beta, it stayed packed the whole day. We even witnessed a few massive sing-a-longs.

Unfortunately, due to Enigma's underhanded tactics and the severe lack of best pony in the game at the time of the leak, I lost our Equestria Gaming Fighting is Magic grudge match. Good thing the con comes around again in less than a year - hope to see you all there!

Brony Show Lets Play

This week's The Brony Show lets play is Terraria again, but this time they have it all planned out, so it won't just be people falling all over the place. The show will be at 9 PM EST

So go to http://www.livestream.com/thebronyshow!
It's awesome.

This will be the central post for the Brony Show Lets Plays in the future.

Friendship Brigade

Friendship Brigade is a gaming community that has recently popped up, they focus mainly on Non-Pony related games. You can check out the calender they have on the website for Game Dates, online meetups, and other gaming related events. The site is also the home to the MLG teams, which are (I believe) competitive teams that 'battle' other teams in online matches.

Anyway, have some copypaste:

Okay, so right now, we're trying to work on expanding our selection of activities to do on the site other than talking about poines, including new servers, more frequest hosting of console lobbies, and maybe even some Livestream channels. If you guys know anyone or any groups that can help with any of the above items, it would be greatly appreciated. If you joined due to the recent EqD post (which was FUN to get happen again), this is a good time to show what you could bring to the table for our site, and the same goes for any pre-existing members. I know that TF2, Terraria, and Minecraft can get a little stale from time to time, so this would really help us out. If you have anything to offer, contact me or Razor. If we're not available, you can tell a moderator and they can inform us. We're trying to keep the workload on Spliced to a minimum right now, so try to stick to contacting admins.

To reiterate: if you can help set up servers, console lobbies, or Livestream channels, PLEASE let us know, and we will work on getting those set up. You can contact us at mlgpony [at] yahoo [dot] com
Anyway, it seems like a really cool site, so go and check it out!

Gaming for 24 hours straight, to raise funds for Extra Life!

Support Windsor gamers helping sick kids.
October 25th members of the Windsor Gaming Resource will be gathering at Brimstone Games to play games for 24 hours straight in support of Extra Life!

This is our second year in a row supporting Extra Life as a group (some individual members have been doing it longer). Last year we raised $1800 for The Children's Miracle Network of Hospitals blowing away our $1000 goal. This year we are doubling that goal to $2000 and we would love to blow that away and hit at least $3000 or more!

What is Extra Life?

Extra Life was started in 2008 by the Sarcastic Gamer Community as a tribute to one specific leukemia victim: Victoria Enmon. The group created a 24-hour long video game marathon to raise money for the hospital that treated and fought beside Tori. 100% of the funds raised went to the local Children's Miracle Network.

Now thousands of gamers have joined in this annual event. In 2009 the event spread allowing participants to donate to the Hospital of their choice and now hundreds of websites and tens of thousands of gamers will take part in this charity event this year.

What is the WGR doing for Extra Life?

As many members as possible are going to head to Brimstone Games at 10:00am on Saturday October 25th. Once there it's simple: we game, and we game for 24 hours straight. We'll be going until 10:00am on Sunday. We will be playing board games, miniature games and maybe even some pen and paper roleplaying games.

In addition to all the gaming, at 8:00pm on Saturday night we will also be hosting a live game auction. Anyone is welcome to attend this portion of the event. We've got a great selection of games to auction off and 100% of the proceeds will be going to Extra Life.

You can find Brimstone at 3298 Walker Rd. Parking is available on the south side of the building and on the street around back.

What can you do to support us?

Come play games: You should come join us on the 25th and play some games! Even if you can't come out for all 24 hours it would be awesome if you could stop in and say hi, bring us some caffeine and/or play a game or two. We would love the support and encouragement. You can show up at any time during the event. Stop in after work, say hi at lunch, whenever.

Join our team: Extra Life lets groups of participants make a team page and we have one for the Windsor Gaming Resource. Even if you aren't going to actually come out to Brimstone and play with us, if you are going to participate at home or at your own FLGS we would love to have you on our team. Click here to join up!

Sponsor a Windsor Gaming Resource member: Any amount helps, even a buck, and the Extra Life site has a wide variety of payment options even including a monthly donation deal. They also offer charity receipts. Support me directly by clicking here.

Participate in the live auction: The auction will be held at 8pm on Saturday October 25th and there will be a wide variety of new and used games on the auction block. All money raised will be donated to Extra Life through the group page.

Donate games: Are you a game publisher? Do you have too many games and don't know what to do with them? How about donating your games to the cause. You can either give them to us to play during the event or you can donate them to be sold at the live auction. Any donations can be dropped off the day of the event or contact gilvanblight(at)gmail.com to make arrangement before then.

Thanks to our sponsors:

While organizing this event I sent out emails to a variety of game companies asking if they would be willing to support the WGR in this effort. Last year Stronghold Games and Z-Man Games were awesome enough to support us. This year many other companies have stepped up to the plate.

Huge thanks to Z-man and Stronghold Games for supporting for two years in a row!

Thanks to Rio Grande Games, Loony Labs, Mantic Games, Game Salute, Alderac Entertainment GroupMinion GamesBlue Orange Games and Arcane Wonders for supporting us for the first time this year.

Open gaming at Brimstone August 24th

Now that The Great Canadian Board Game Blitz is done it's back to our regular weekly schedule of events.

The Windsor Gaming resource returns to Brimstone Games on August 24th from 6pm until Midnight. Brimstone has a huge gaming area with tons of tables, chairs and great lighting. I'm told by the owner Sean that we could fit 60 of us in there.

This is an open, all ages, themeless gaming event. Just a bunch of us getting together to play some games. Magic the Gathering and Warhammer are popular at Brimstone along with the usual mix of card and board games

You can find Brimstone at 3298 Walker Rd. Parking is available on the south side of the building and on the street around back.

Legends of Equestria - Pre Alpha Update (August 2012)

Legends of Equestria

Everypony loves Legends of Equestria, and if you don't then this update might just convince you to follow this game more carefully. They show off a ton of new features such as the inventory system, a new flight system, an upgraded Everfree Forest, fireballs, and a visitable Tartarus! Sadly enough there is still no release date in sight, but I'd rather have a well-polished game later then a buggy and unfinished MMO now.

And one more thing. It keeps bothering me in that the game has a very distinct lack of cartoon shading for the ponies, and without it they look rather...ugly in their current, untextured state (no offense). Perhaps they should look into a similar shading system as what PonyKart uses, eh?

Luna Game Second Interview

So, ULTRAMARIOX asked the creator of the Luna Game series a few questions about the series, and got some answers back.
You should head to the Ponychan Thread to read it.
You can scroll past the first interview and read the second if the thread dies.

Here is the first interview of creator of the Luna Game series done by Claire on 7/14

1) Well first of all, congratulations on the newest Luna Game! It's terrifying as expected but it's definitely something new that I think we can safely say it was totally unexpected. Do you have any more plans for future Luna Game instalments or will number 4 be the last?
Thank you very much! I can honestly say it's been very fun making the series, and I really appreciate you liking it.
Yes, I have many plans for the Luna Game in the future, and I can honestly say it's not ending any time soon. I'm simply having too much fun making it to stop now.

2) Back to the beginning -- what gave you the idea for the first Luna game? Or was it just a random experiment?
It was more of a random experiment, I just got the sudden urge to make something creepy, and see how people would react to it.

3) What did you think when the game got so popular? Were you surprised?
Honestly, yes. I was completely surprised when it became popular. When it got posted to EqD, I honestly thought people would just shun it from then on because of what it was. I had no idea people would actually enjoy these.

4) Anypony who plays the Luna Game series can tell that they're very well made games. Apart from the Luna Game series, have you made any games before or was Luna Game your first attempt?
I've been making games for many years now, I have tons of unfinished projects, and many other things I plan on doing in the future. It's a really fun hobby I have, and I keep learning more and getting better with each game I complete. The Luna Games are some of the first games I've actually managed to fully complete, regardless of how short they are.

5) Do you have any friends who are bronies? If so, do they know who happens to be behind the Luna Game Series?
Oh yes, I have a few Brony friends. I only trust my close close ones with the knowledge that I made it, I even get some of them to test it before release! A few have complained to me about their sleep problems though, so I guess there is a down side.

6) Luna Game 3 is quite similar to an idea that somepony proposed in the Equestria Gaming comments. Was 3 inspired by that comment or was it just a coincidence?
Oh yeah, that idea was a huge inspiration for the third, I changed it up a bit, but it was what I based it on.

7) Any particular reason you chose Luna as the player's character?
Well, It was probably because the sprite sheet I used at first had pretty terrible sprites, all except for the Luna one. I guess another reason was that, believe it or not, Luna is one of my favorite characters. Yes I know I kill her in some pretty horrible ways, but I do it because I love her.

8) Do you ever plan to give the Luna Game series a story?
If you look deep enough into the series, I'm sure you can already find one. ;)

9) Were there any games that you played, fan or mainstream that you were inspired by?
For the Luna Game? Not really, at that point there weren't even many pony games out, and Equestria Gaming didn't exist! So this was one of the ways of fulfilling my inner pony gaming needs

10) Honestly; how boring was this interview? :b
Not boring at all! I've never been interviewed before, so it was actually quite fun!

Here is a second interview by ULTRAMARIOX on 8/16:

Q: On the ending of Luna Game 0, when it says "Its not over yet" Does it mean that there will be a Luna Game 5? or a Luna Game 0.5? As then ending of Luna Game 4 says "Your fate is sealed."
A: Luna Game 0 was designed to be a Prequel to the Luna Game series, so when it says "It's not over yet", It is simply referring to the other Luna Games taking place after 0 (Luna Game 1, 2, 3, and 4). The "Your Fate has already been sealed" message comes up only when you attempt to play the Luna Game 4 again. It only means that your fate has been sealed in that game, thus you cannot replay it.

Q: How much development goes between the Luna Games? Such as the time it took for Luna Game 0 took about the same length as Luna Game 2 or 3 did, so will there be the same expected time for the next Luna Game?
A: For the more recent games, a lot more time has been put into developing some kind of story and chain of events. A single Luna Game usually takes around a month to complete, though it can take more when more content is added.

Q: Are you planning on making only creepypastas? In the time it took for Luna Game 3 and 4 to complete, you could have seemingly already made a full My Little Pony game, which has not yet happened, aside from the creepypasta games and a few decent others. So is there any chance for a full game? or just creepypasta games?
A: As of now, I do not plan on creating anything else other than creepypastas. I really enjoy making these Luna Games, and if I ever make another game, it will likely be very similar in concept. Though, the possibility for a 'full game' as a part of the Luna Game series is possible. I'm not confirming it to be, but I will say that a lot of things are possible.

Q: The plot is Princess Luna became Nightmare Moon on her quest, killed Pinkie Pie, Had nightmares and visions, killed herself, and escaped the darkness in hell. IS that correct?
A: Well, if you want to view that as the story, I'm not stopping you.
I'm leaving the story open to interpretation.
